YHA Okehampton Youth Hostel

Klondyke Rd, Okehampton EX20 1EW, UK – 01837 53916

Nice location and interesting bit history. Got a single room for around £20 very good with special offer. Friendly staff. Welcome brake from wild camping on Dartmoor in winter with a wisdom tooth infection pooch. Only let down was shower was not even warm I sure I was using it correctly. They also have a camping area. There are plugs in the rooms for charging your gear. There is also a camping area. I would and think will stay here again next time I'm down.

We stayed here with a large group, who rented the hostel for the weekend. I couldn't fault it: There were lots of smaller dorms of about 4 or 6 beds, which we preferred to the hostels that have a smaller number of much larger dormitories. The hostel was perfectly clean and had everything we needed. We catered for ourselves, so we didn't get to try the hostels own catering options, but we looked at the menus and prices and on the strength of those we would definitely return to this hostel as regular backpacking visitors. A very good hostel.

Manor House

Bowerland Rd, Okehampton EX20 4NA, UK – 01837 53053

Second visit here. Decor of the main building looks dated, but that is my only criticism. Facilities and activities are excellent. Participate in the organised sessions or book your own activities. Something for everyone. Do the arts and crafts, or take part in the sport. Relax in the spa. Food is good, plenty of choice at the buffet.

I have rated a 5 because despite a few small things. The place is fantastic. CLEAN , GOOD STAFF the food was good. Sports are gr3at and the ones run by staff all of the staff have been welcoming and run the sports well. Lots of toilets in building which is fantastic. Wood highly recommend anyone coming here old or young !!!

Betty Cottles Inn

Tavistock Rd, Okehampton EX20 4LR, UK – 01837 55339

First time attending since the place is under new management. The service was quick. The restaurant was clean and tidy and well kept and the table linen beautifully crisp and white. The carvery was hot and fresh and very tasty. The grounda were also very beautiful. I would recommend this place.

A party of twelve of us all enjoyed a Sunday carvery here, the meat was well cooked/moist. There was an excellent range of vegetables including cauliflower and broccoli cheese, everything was hot. We all enjoyed our meals. The cost of the Carvery was very reasonable and included a drink from the bar. Would recommend to all. The Inn recently changed ownership in Dec last year and it was encouraging to hear how enthusiastic the staff were about all the improvements the new owners plan to make to the interior decor of the Inn.

Pubs, Gastro Pubs and Bars

The White Hart Hotel

Fore St, Okehampton EX20 1HD, UK – 01837 658533

A nice clean pub, friendly staff and good food. On one visit my friends breakfast was missing sausages and I ordered a small fish and chips but wasn’t told at the till point that the standard fish and chips were on offer at the same price which would have been useful to know, all the condiments were pretty much empty too. The toilets are always clean and the atmosphere is pretty good most of the time. Overall a good place to go for food or a drink.

It's a 'spoons (you know, the absolutely ginormous chain). Decent food, decently priced. The White Hart isn't a huge place and it was very busy when I last visited with my family but after waiting a few minutes a member of staff approached and told us that a table was about to become free. Very helpful. We didn't have to wait long for our food, which was hot and tasty. There's a small outside seating area at the rear. The walkway that goes from front to back is quite narrow and some of the seating areas involve steps so I'm not sure how accessible this place would be for wheelchair users.

Travel Super Market search and compare prices for hotels all over the world. Could also be useful for you. I This said I was told by a hotelier that the way to get cheap rooms is to ring up the week before and ask for the weekend rate. You can usually get an absolute bargain as they will trying to book all the rooms that they have not sold! Could be worth a try!

Upcott House

Upcott Hill, Okehampton EX20 1SQ, UK – 01837 53743

Good owners fantastic building and kocation

The couple who run this place were really friendly and helpful in terms of telling us what was going on in town and in the surrounding area. It's also a beautiful house and the breakfast was top notch!

Capella

31 Station Rd, Okehampton EX20 1EA, UK – 01837 53607

A very comfortable B&B. We were on a cycling holiday and choose from Google maps. The en-suite room was lovely, and came with complementary tea, coffee and biscuits. The owner could not have been more welcoming and even laundered my complete cycling clothes over night without charge. We ate dinner at the Fountain Inn 100 metres away, which came recommended by the owner and was good value and top quality. Following a very comfortable nights sleep, a full English breakfast was served in the dinning room, including home made honey and marmalade. Highly recommended and good value for money.

B&B Meadowlea Guest House

65 Station Rd, Okehampton EX20 1EA, UK – 01837 53200

The B&B owners safe me and my companions from Winter Storm. We were cold and tired and they accept us the moment we arrived there. We did not have to wait for a room. Room was spacious and clean with lovely views. Very comfortable beds. The lounge/ play room has a fire place where we could stay and feel like a home. Homely and friendly atmosphere. Close to town centre. VERY RECOMMENDED

Beautyful place and people

If you would like something truly different you might like to have a look at Airbnb. These are mostly B and Bs provided by people on a very informal basis. The may have a spare room, a yurt, a cottage or a barge with space they can receive guests for a night or a month! The website is highly professional. You can really see what you are going to get. Very well worth a look. Airbnb also show 'conventional' B&Bs as well. Enjoy!
